Basics of Renting a Dumpster

Questions & Answers
Dumpster rental directory. Answers to all your questions.
Dumpster is a huge open-topped trash collection container that has specific design elements, which allow it to be loaded onto a special truck for collection. Think of a dump truck, but instead of the truck collecting your trash one by one (or container by container), the dump truck is able to leave its bed onto the street and your entire street can leave everything in it for collection later.
Dumpster rental is when you employ the services of a waste management company that rents out dumspters.
There are many reasons people would rent a dumpster. Perhaps they’re remodeling or getting ready to sell the house. Here are a few more
reasons to rent a dumpster.
1. Spring Cleaning
2. Gardening and landscaping trash after pruning, lopping, or hedging
3. Cost-effective—gets rid of a lot of trash instead of doing multiple trips to the dump site or landfill
Hiring a dumpster is easy—what’s difficult is hiring a reliable one. The first thing you need to ask is if they have all the licenses and permits. If your property is small, you could ask for their public liability insurance in
case of an accident and if they hit your property while doing their business
Positioning. There are two options here—off-property, meaning on the streets, or on property, meaning your driveway.
No matter what anyone tells you, there’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all dumpster. Big projects need big dumpsters, little projects need little ones. Why pay a fortune for space you don’t need? On the other hand, why inconvenience yourself just to save a buck?
Most trash dumpster rentals are going to come in the following sizes:
10 Yard Dumpster- The 10 yard dumpster is a pretty safe bet if you’ve got a small clean-out or remodeling project going on. For example, let’s say you’re wading through Aunt Esther’s attic! These trash dumpsters typically hold up to 2 tons of waste. If you’ve got more than that, you’re going to need to go up a size!
15 Yard Dumpster- This is your dumpster of choice for kitchen and basement remodels, construction cleanup and HVAC projects that generate up to 3 tons of trash. We’re talking about 5 pickup loads worth here!
20 Yard Dumpster- The 20 yard dumpster is usually the prime choice for trash dumpster rental, since it holds up to 4 tons of debris (about 10 pickup truck loads of “stuff”). This is good for whole house renovations, additions, large basement and attic cleanouts and getting rid of bulky furniture.
40 Yard Dumpster- The behemoth of the trash dumpster rental industry, the 30 yard dumpster holds over 20 pickup loads worth of trash and will give you the room you need to rebuild your home from the ground up.
When you’re miles from a local dump, getting the right dumpster for the job is essential. So make sure you make the right choice the first time! Getting the wrong trash dumpster rental can set you back days on a project. Don’t you have something better to do with your time than that?
1. Evaluate your garbage disposal needs. How much and what kind of trash do you actually have? How long will you need the dumpster for? This will determine the size of the dumpster that you will need and the price that you will pay.
– Because all waste products take up volume, a dumpster size is measured in cubic yards, with container capacities ranging from 3 to 40 cubic yards. However, not all garbage is created equal; concrete, metal, roofing materials, and other hefty construction materials weigh more. Many dumpster rental companies will not let you fill the entire container and may even charge you extra if the materials deposited in the dumpster exceed the maximum weight limit. You will likely need to rent a dumpster at least one size bigger than you think you need.
– Be sure to consider the height of the container, as dumpsters of similar volume come in different dimensions. You want to make sure that it is easy for you to put things into your dumpster. A tall dumpster may not be ideal when disposing of heavy materials; to ensure easy access ask for a lower container.
2. You want to consider where you will put the dumpster. Will it fit in front of your house, on your property, or a place of business? Is there enough maneuvering space for the truck delivering and picking up the container? Keep in mind that laws pertaining to dumpsters on the street vary considerably and it is a good idea to check with your local parking enforcement office. Before the dumpster arrives be sure to clear an area for your dumpster.
3. Contact a dumpster renting company in your area to find out the sizes of their dumpsters and the prices that they charge. Inquire about any additional fees or hidden costs: What is their weigh per dumpster limit? When will the dumpster be delivered? Do they have special promotions or discounts for residential/commercial/new customers? Sit back, relax, and wait for your container to arrive!
There are some items we simply don’t have the resources to dispose of per EPA guidelines.
Those items include:
- Biohazardous materials/medical waste
- Paint (although dry paint cans are permissible)
- Batteries
- Propane tanks
- Liquids/Solvents/Freon/Chemicals
- Equipment containing gas or oil
- Electronics and tires may incur additional handling fees
Rental Period:
Each of our dumpster rentals comes with delivery to your home, office or construction site, a full One-week rental and disposal of your trash (up to designated weight limits). The rental period or waste volume may be increased for an additional fee.
Permits:
Each City has different regulations and permit requirements concerning dumpsters placed on private property, streets or any other public right of way. Contact your local city hall and they will provide you with the regulations and costs to purchase any necessary permits. Pacific Dumpsters is not responsible for obtaining proper permits
Dumpster Pricing:
The price of a dumpster rental is determined by the city of delivery, dumpster size and the type of debris you will be putting into the roll off dumpster. When you call Houston Dumpsters, we will give you an all-inclusive price quote based on these specifications. Remember, because we’re a local company we can give you the best price in town.
It’s always a good idea to book your dumpster as far in advance as possible to ensure its availability and our ability to deliver the day you need it. Keep in mind we’re busiest on Mondays and Fridays. While we always appreciate a couple days’ notice, we realize timely delivery is critical to keeping your project moving on time and budget. While speed of service is based on availability, typically, as long as you place your order by noon, we will be able to deliver the dumpster the next business day. In some instances, same day delivery is possible.
Versatile Range of Sizes
Home clean-up projects can produce a large amount of junk. Luckily, there are a versatile range of dumpster sizes available to accommodate for whatever load of trash you’re needing to dispose of. Most dumpster rental companies offer dumpsters ranging from 3 cubic yard to 40 cubic yard. These can hold approximately 1 to 60 pick up truck worth of trash/refuse. As such, they are perfect for garden clean-ups, decluttering, party waste management or situations where you may be moving house.
Convienient:
Dumpsters are a great solution that can be conveniently dropped off at your exact location. Not only will this save you a great amount of stress, but it will also ensure the correct disposal of your waste.
Sustainable
Once your dumpster has been filled to its limit, your dumpster rental company will return to pick up the dumpster and send it to a recycling facility. Here, your waste will be sorted and salvaged through, in order to identify any materials that can be reused or recycled. Consequently, through choosing to dispose of your waste in a dumpster, you will be reducing the amount of materials that ends up going to landfill!
Cost-Effective
Disposing of your waste in the proper manner shouldn’t have to be an expensive task. Luckily, dumpster rental companies make it incredibly easy and affordable to get the waste removal services you need. Most of these businesses want you to choose their services over attempting to deal with the waste yourself, not only so you’re saved a whole lot of time and effort, but also to ensure that your waste is disposed of in a sustainable manner. As such, they are sure to provide their services at highly reasonable rates, allowing everyone the opportunity to experience the difference skip bins make for their rubbish removal needs.
Wondering how much it will cost you to rent a dumpster? Prices for renting a dumpster vary considerably by region and depend on several important factors, including type, capacity/weight limit, lease duration, waste type, and dump fees. To give you an example, if you are planning to rent a roll-off container for temporary debris collection and removal and keep the dumpster for 3-4 days, prices can $100-$1000, depending on size and debris type. Similarly depending on local garbage rates, the size of the container, and if there are additional pick-up/disposal fees for non-recyclable waste.
Type: Depending on your waste management needs, you are likely looking to rent either a roll-off or a front loading container. A roll-off container is an open-top dumpster that looks like a large metal box. It rolls of the delivery truck into the street, your backyard, or your driveway. This type of dumpster is ideal for temporary debris collection and removal; you fill it in yourself and then the trash is picked up and hauled away. Sizes for roll-off containers generally range from 10 to 40 cubic yards. A front-load container is usually smaller than a roll-off dumpster, has a lid, and is ideal for regularly scheduled garbage pick-up. Sizes for front-loading containers generally range from 1 to 10 cubic yards.
Capacity & Weight limit: For both front loading and roll-off containers the larger the dumpster the more expensive it is. However, renting a dumpster that is too small can also be costly. You might accrue additional charges if the weight of the materials deposited in the dumpster exceeds the maximum weight limit for that size and price. For example, A Florida contractor rented a 20-cubic-yard roll-off dumpster for about $400, filled it with heave construction debris and was charged an extra $400 because the weight of the debris exceeded the 3-ton limit. Similarly, a dumpster that is too small would require additional pick-ups to haul away the trash. Although some companies automatically include dump/disposal fee in their quoted prices, depending on local garbage rates and the type of waste deposited there may an additional charge of 25-250 dollars or more for each pickup.
Lease Duration: How long do you need the dumpster for? Dumpsters can be rented by the month or on a permanent basis (usually with a 12-month contract). Keep in mind that if you keep a temporary roll-off longer than the previously agreed upon lease duration, there can be additional charges of an average $15-$50 a day.
Type of Debris/Waste: Disposal fees vary considerably from location to location and often depend on composition of the load. Whereas some companies include pick-up and disposal fees in the quoted price others charge extra, depending on the waste type. Recyclable or “green” waste generally costs less than garbage or other household junk such as furniture. Most dumpster companies place restrictions on the type of items that can be put into the dumpster and will not accept tires, household appliances, computer equipment, or other potentially toxic items, or the company will charge additional fees for these types of items.
There comes a time in every home owner’s life when it is necessary to clean house. In some cases home owners accumulate so much that it could become necessary to call a local dumpster rental company.
Of course, not all home owners find their garages, storage rooms, basements, or attics overflowing. Sometimes a dumpster may be the perfect solution for clean up during or after a home remodeling, re-roofing project, or major landscaping project. Home owners are often prompted to dispose of excess possessions when they are getting ready to put their home up for sale. While a homeowner may reach a point where they do not really notice unwanted items piling up, a prospective home buyer notices. Nothing looks and feels better than seeing a cluttered and unkempt area restored to its rightful purpose.
Since most city trash disposal companies limit the amount of rubbish they pick up weekly, as well as the types of trash accepted, it becomes the home owner’s responsibility to call in a dumpster company to move excessive accumulations, unwanted furniture or appliances, and trash.
One of the first questions that must be addressed is the size of the dumpster required for the job at hand. These units come in yardage sizes varying from ten to as huge as thirty or forty yard containers. A typical ten yard unit might be 12’x8’x4′ though dumpsters do come in a variety of dimensions. A ten yard dumpster should hold the clean out from a small basement or garage, the roof shingles from a 1500 square foot roof, or a small kitchen or bath remodel. A thirty yard container could hold the trash from a major home addition or the construction of a small home. It could probably accommodate the demolition of a garage or shed on the property. When in doubt about what size to order, a call to a dumpster rental company should help.
When renting a container unit from a dumpster rental business, the customer is charged according to the size of the unit, the length of the rental term, and any weight exceeding the weight that was negotiated when the contract was signed for the rental. If a ten yard dumpster is rented, but the actual weight of your trash is twelve tons, an extra charge will be added to the rental fee. When the rental company disposes of your unwanted items at a dump site, they are charged by weight, so that extra charge is, of course, passed on to the consumer.
It is amazing what one can put into a trash dumpster. While each state may have slightly different regulations about types of debris that are disallowed, almost anything goes. Be sure to check with the dumpster rental company for a list of items that are not permitted. The usual exceptions would be chemicals, gasoline, oils, and other toxic or flammable substances.
Most companies will accept anything from your yard, including lawn equipment, yard waste, leaves, grass, and brush. Water heaters and furnaces can be taken away, as can other appliances and electrical equipment. Furniture and construction materials including concrete and brick are also good candidates for removal, but be mindful of weight when disposing of such heavy items. Dumpster service is a valuable opportunity for the home owner to dispose of unwanted items and enjoy the good feelings and added space when the clean-up is complete.
Whether you’re looking for a small residential home clean up or a large commercial building renovation, demolition, and/or land clearing project, metro area has the right size dumpster to handle your project. Your dumpster will be delivererd and picked up on your schedule, to meet your needs.

Proper waste management should be a priority whether you are staging a major home renovation or even a simple spring cleaning project. Most people these days resort to hiring dumpsters because of the convenience that it offers. Here are some of the important points to consider before ordering the dumpster.
1. Know what size of dumpster you are going to need beforehand. Choosing the right size is probably the most crucial decision that you have to make when hiring a dumpster. Most people underestimate the size that they are going to need, but in the end, they end up spending much more because they failed to give an allowance to their estimate. Note that you are not allowed to overload your dumpster, so it is really best to get a size bigger than your estimate to be on the safe side. Nothing is more stressful than the inconvenience of having to spend money to rent more than one dumpster because of simple miscalculations.
2. Know where to put the dumpster. Before renting a dumpster, you have to determine where you will place the huge bin in your property. If you have a spacious property then there would be no problem.
3. Know what not to put in your rented bin. Not all things can be stored in a bin. Some of these prohibited items include computer monitors, laptops. batteries, chemicals, refrigerators, freezers and other hazardous wastes. You may want to discuss this before sealing the deal.
